Book Review: Shadow and Bone

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really wanted to like this book. It had a lot of great qualities. It had an intense plot, compelling characters, and a unique story concept. I loved how the story began and I was really excited to read on about the characters that I already found myself drawn to. I was a little disappointed though.

About half-way through the book, it really started to really drag. There were chapters upon chapters of the same problem repeating over and over and over with no change and I found myself losing interest. I understand the importance of allowing the reader to truly feel a character’s struggle, but there are some things that are unnecessary to include. If something has already been said or written, it doesn’t really need to be repeated. Repetition can be good at times for stylistic purposes, however it becomes monotonous when there is no new information for a long time.

Shadow and Bone was a really promising story, and I understand why some people like it, but it wasn’t my favorite, and I don’t think I will read the next book in the series.
